Overview
Santal 33 is Le Labo’s smoky, leathery interpretation of a woody fragrance. Created by Frank Voelkl in 2011, it combines a rugged character with softer floral and musky details.
The brand frames it through the imagery of the American West: open country, firelight and worn leather. That setting helps explain why Santal 33 is more textured and dry than the simple, creamy sandalwood scent its name might suggest.
Cardamom gives the woods a spicy edge, while iris and violet soften their outline. Its character comes from those contrasts rather than sandalwood alone. If you are comparing it with a more wood-focused fragrance such as Tam Dao, the smoky, leather-like side is an important part of what makes Santal 33 a different experience.

More than a soft sandalwood scent
Santal 33 takes woods in a smoky, leathery direction. Despite the name, don’t expect just a simple, creamy sandalwood perfume. There’s a more rugged idea behind it.
If you want your wood fragrances soft and sweet, try this before buying. Comparing it with Tam Dao could help you work out which direction you prefer. They offer different takes on a woody scent, and you don’t have to choose the one with the more familiar name.
